This spring, you might be welcoming more than just warmer weather. Pest experts are warning of a major surge in pest populations across the U.S., with the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) forecasting an early and aggressive season for everything from ants and mosquitoes to rodents and ticks.
A recent report from Tom’s Guide outlines just how widespread the issue is expected to be—and why now is the time to prepare.
Why This Year Is Different
According to the NPMA’s Spring & Summer 2025 Bug Barometer, fluctuating winter temperatures across much of the country have created ideal breeding and survival conditions for pests.
“Warm, wet conditions in much of the U.S. have helped pest populations grow earlier than usual,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, chief entomologist for NPMA. “Homeowners should expect to see pest activity ramp up quickly as spring progresses.”
They have identified 9 pest populations to watch out for. Ants, cockroaches, earwigs, flies, mosquitoes, rodents, stinging insects, termites, and ticks are all predicted to rise.
What’s Surging Where?
The article breaks down nine types of pests expected to see growth this spring. Here’s what to expect:
-
Northeast & New England: A warm and rainy spring is expected to lead to a boom in ants and ticks. As summer heats up, stinging insects like wasps and hornets will also become more aggressive and widespread.
-
Southeast: Warmth and high rainfall will create perfect conditions for mosquitoes and termites. After tropical storms, expect fly and mosquito populations to multiply rapidly.
-
Great Lakes, Ohio Valley & Midwest: Ticks are likely to show up earlier than usual thanks to mild spring weather. As summer sets in, the region will also see a surge in mosquitoes, ants, and stinging insects fueled by heat and humidity.
-
North Central: Drier conditions may slightly delay early pest activity, but ants and cockroaches will rebound quickly once rain returns. An early spring will also trigger a premature tick season.
-
South Central: Spring rains and leftover moisture from storms will lead to mosquito breeding in standing water. As things dry out in summer, ants and cockroaches are expected to move indoors in search of water sources.
-
Northwest: A warm, wet spring in the Intermountain areas is expected to bring on an early tick surge. In contrast, lower rainfall in the Pacific Northwest may drive cockroaches and earwigs into homes in search of moisture.
-
Southwest: Spring’s moisture will benefit mosquitoes, but the hot, dry summer ahead will drive ants, cockroaches, and even rodents indoors, increasing the chances of infestations in homes and businesses.

Get Ahead of the Surge
According to the NPMA, pest control calls increase significantly in March and April, when insects and rodents become more visible and active. But experts agree that early action is the key to avoiding serious infestations.
Instead of waiting for pests to show up, use natural repellents now to defend your home proactively.
“Taking action before pests become a problem is the best way to avoid the cost and stress of dealing with a full-blown infestation,” says Dr. Fredericks.
