Bedbugs, Summer Travel and Covid-19 (plus bed bug travel safety tips)
Think about this combination in the context of, “which of these things do not go together?”. Bedbugs, Summer Travel and Covid-19.
If you live in an area where Coronavirus travel has begun again, you may be in for a rude awakening… Bed Bugs. Or should I say…
VERY HUNGRY BED BUGS WHO HAVE NOT EATEN IN MONTHS AND ARE STARVING.
If you are thinking that… for the last year or so, with little travel to hotels, motels, AIRBnb’s etc., we have “flattened the curve for bed bugs” (meaning the bed bugs died from lack of food), you are actually wrong. Why. Read on…
Think about it like this. Bed bugs can live up to a year without a meal (a meal for a bed bug is your blood BTW). A whole year!
So, If and when you are traveling again beware.
WHO IS MAKING THESE PREDICTIONS? ENTOMOLOGISTS!
Entomologists are scientists who study bugs. These Entomologists are predicting that summer travel season after Covid-19 are going to cause another big problem, a pandemic of starving bed bugs.
These entomologists are also saying that “sleeping” (kind of like hibernation) bed bugs will become very aggressive at night, and if they are really hungry, may even come out of hiding during the day.
HOW TO COMBAT HIGHLY AGGRESSIVE AND STARVING BEDBUGS WHEN TRAVELING AFTER CORONAVIRUS…
The more you know about bed bugs, the better off you are. At the bottom of this article are some links to bed bug characteristics, pictures, etc. But for now, here are some tips to help keep safe from bed bugs now that traveling is opening up again after coronavirus.
- Inspect your room for bed bugs when you arrive is key!
- Leave your luggage in the bathroom. The best place to leave your suitcase until you inspect your room is in the bathtub (bed bugs are not the best climbers), but for sure keep them out of the main sleeping area.
- Do a thorough inspection of the bed, nightstand, upholstered furniture, and closets. You can use a flashlight or a phone light to help you look for bed bugs, skins, or fecal matter.
- For the bed, remove the blanket and sheets, if your bed has a mattress cover that is good. If not, check the bed for signs (see link below with a great video tutorial by University of California’s Integrated Pest Management Entomologists.
- If you do see any signs of bed bug activity, grab your luggage, leave the room immediately and tell the manager. Have them put you in a room far away from the room with the bed bug infestation.
- If no signs of bed bugs, put your luggage on the room desk (never the floor, make it hard for bed bugs to climb into your luggage and hitchhike home.
- Don’t use the suitcase rack (check that too) as it could have bed bugs there.
